Woolworths Win Prestigious Award
As reported in our previous issue, leading retailer and franchisor Woolworths was short-listed as a finalist in the World Retail Awards 2008. Their entry was based on a programme named the Good Business Journey, a five-year plan in which the company sets out how it intends to do business in future. They set themselves challenging targets linked to four key priorities:
1. Accelerating transformation
2. Driving social development
3. Enhancing the company’s environmental focus
4. Addressing climate changes
Although we wished Woolworths well at the time, we have to confess that we had our doubts. After all, they were the only entrant from the African continent, and would face formidable competition including C&A Germany, Carrefour Group France, Sainsburys and Tesco (UK) and The Warehouse Group (New Zealand).
As it turned out, our doubts were unfounded. Woolworths won the prestigious award of Most Responsible Retailer and we offer our congratulations.
