Stadium Fast Foods in Bloemfontein is as much part of the city as Naval Hill and the Sand du Plessis theatre. The take-away restaurant’s first franchise officially opened on the 10th of October and there are big plans to further expand this sought-after business

It all started on the 5th of May 1980, when Johnny Pereira bought a typical corner cafe off Ella Street and Parkway in Bloemfontein. The cafe near the Free State Stadium was then converted into a fast food restaurant, changing its name to ‘Stadium Fast Foods’ and since then has obtained a fine reputation over the past 30 years. Over the years Pereira has always said that they believe in quality ingredients, fresh produce and friendly service.

Another branch was opened in 2000 in Zastron Street.

The bakery, which was located across the street from the original Stadium Fast Foods, eventually became too small for their supply needs.  In 2009, Stadium moved into a new office building and fully equipped bakery in Lombard Street.  Fresh bread, cakes and baked products are baked fresh daily and supply all the stores.

This year, Stadium Fast Foods introduced two franchise options. Franchisees can choose the ‘Stadium Express’ and focus on fish and chicken or they can choose the ‘Stadium Food Court’ which involves the entire menu.

In 2012, Stadium Fast Foods has developed quickly.

In May, a Stadium Express opened in the Shoprite Centre in Moeshoeshoe Street Rocklands, and a Stadium Foodcourt opened in the Twin City shopping centre in Heidedal in August.

The first franchise opened on the 9th of August in St. Andrew Street opposite Church Square.

Steve Pestana, the first franchisee, formerly owned the ‘Hungry I-Cafe and takeaway restaurant’ on the same premises in St. Andrew Street. He said that he realised the need for a trendy take-away diner type restaurant where people could sit at neat tables and enjoy helpful service and quality products.

Pestana has been very pleased with Stadium Fast Foods thus far, saying he and his staff get very good feedback from customers who visit his franchise. He also said that customers enjoy the option of calling in and placing orders in advance and collecting it later.

Pestana said that he opened his store with amazing specials on offer.

The next new franchise will open shortly in Botchabelo near Thaba Nchu.

Pereira says customers can expect the same quality of products in the franchises that they have become accustomed to at Stadium Fast Foods in the past.

There are already plans for opening more new franchises in 2013 in the Bloemfontein area.
