Why did you go down the franchise route?
I’ve always wanted to own my own business. my parents owned a retail franchise for 10 years, the hours of the Kumon franchise is much better than retail.
Why did you choose your franchise?
I was doing Kumon as a scholar, thus when the opportunity came for me to own my own centre, I knew I was investing in a reputable brand.
What did you do before taking up a franchise?
I worked as a commercial property broker.
How did you raise the finance?
With help from my husband and parents, we made it work.
What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
- Training pre-opening: Everything you need to know before your doors open.
- Training post-opening: +/- 1 year training of intensive study of the programme.
What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?
At the centre / at home doing admin
- 8h30 – 12h00: Emails, Newsletters, Finances, Events etc.
- 12h00 – 13h00: Centre Prep
- 13h15 – 17h30: Class time
What challenges have you faced?
Managing staff I took over from the previous owner.
Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?
Yes, giving myself the opportunity to pursue business, self-development, mathematical and English skill, working with parents and students – I have a multi-dimensional job!
What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?
Commit to your business, explore and find out everything there is to know to make a success out of it. Learn from other franchisees in the industry.
What are your plans for the future?
Growing to 200+ students and expanding to a house in the neighbourhood. Kumon should become a well-known name in Constantia Park.
Would you do it again?
Yes! Tough to be your own boss, but also so rewarding to see a 4 year old read for the first time or a Grade 6 student doing Calculus on her own!
