My Kumon Journey
Name: Monique Broude
Location: Olivedale Library, Olivedale
Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise?
I qualified as a teacher and never taught. I love children and don’t have any of my own. I heard about Kumon from a friend and started investigating
What did you do before taking up a franchise?
I ran my own business for 18 years and needed a change from a very difficult lifestyle. I worked all hours at a pool club.
How did you raise the finance?
What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
The initial training was very intense. But I received a manual which covers everything in the training. The support from my area manager is fantastic and I can always call her for any problems or queries. There are training sessions during the year and ongoing workshops. There are also very valuable conferences. The website is also very valuable when looking in the resource centre.
What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?
I go through student folders, communicate with parents and conduct new interviews for potential students.
What challenges have you faced?
Not being able to work with my own times and days as the library is booked by other people. Another challenge is getting payment from parents, on time.
Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?
Yes, the support is fantastic from head office, my area manager, the Kumon Distribution Centre as well as other instructors.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?
Plan well and make sure the premises you get are flexible with times you may need at a later stage. Try and get your own premises from the start.
What are your plans for the future?
I am looking to buy a house, purely for Kumon. I can then have free range of hours and open 5 days a week.
Would you do it again?
I would, without a doubt. I love everything about it.
