King Delivery fits the bill – it suits my kind of lifestyle.
Name: Paul Wilke
Franchise: King Delivery
Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise? Needed to find a business with low overheads, something I could do from home, not too many staff issues if any. King Delivery fits the bill.
What did you do before taking up a franchise? I owned a Take-Away business in Pinetown central
How did you raise the finance? I sold my Take-Away business.
What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing? We received all the training and support we needed to get started and for days after that. If I have a question, the answer is just a phone call away. PTraining and support is readily available at all times from the Franchisor.
What is a typical day for you as a franchisee? Initially your days are filled with setting up appointments with restaurant owners in your area. Get the restaurant owner to sign up for your menu booklet. Getting the menus to the franchisor to do the artwork and have the booklets printed. Advertise for driver positions and interview them and put them on standby. Once the booklets arrive, distribute them under your close supervision, those books are your business. Then in a day or two the orders will start coming through, keep contact with your drivers and restaurant owners, once a week cash up your driver and bill your restaurants.
What challenges have you faced? The biggest challenge is to keep advertising for drivers, never be short of drivers. Driver’s vehicle breaking down on route for delivery.
Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how? Yes, I can run the business from home; there is no rush hour traffic. It gives me more freedom. I can monitor the deliveries on my computer and cell phone anywhere.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise? Being a franchisee is not for the faint-hearted – one needs to be an entrepreneurial type, enthusiastic, passionate and, of course, self-motivated. Hard work is the order of the day, but if you’re willing to do it, the return on investment is excellent and you will be handsomely rewarded. If you are thinking of going into franchising, make sure you do your research – choose a franchise that is suited to your interests, budget and management style.
What are your plans for the future? Would like to buy more branches around our area. I would like to have four or five branches all bordering my area so I can easily manage all of them myself.
Would you do it again? Oh Absolutely! It is a very good concept; you don’t have staff problems, union problems and you can check in on the business at any time, it’s the perfect business for my lifestyle.
