Expanding Horizons: Sausage Saloon’s Global Footprint Grows

With over 100 locations thriving across South Africa and an expanding presence in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sausage Saloon is only just beginning its global journey.

In addition to a food truck on Mirdif Way near Dubai’s Etihad Mall and a kiosk at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the renowned hotdog brand has now launched its first store in Port Louis, Mauritius. Plans are already in place to open two more outlets on the island before the year ends.

This move into Mauritius is a pivotal step in Sausage Saloon’s international growth strategy, which includes upcoming expansions into New Delhi, India, the Sultanate of Oman, and Zimbabwe. The brand aims to strengthen its global presence through master franchise partnerships.

In his 2024 Budget Speech, Mauritius’ Minister of Finance, Economic Planning, and Development, Dr. Renganaden Padayachy, highlighted the country’s impressive 7% GDP growth, reaching R249.5 billion in 2023. Investment levels surged by 30.9% that same year, aligning with the nation’s vision to position itself as Africa’s equivalent of Singapore.

“Mauritius is attracting high-spending tourists who stay longer, and with a target of 1.4 million arrivals by year-end, it presents an exciting market for us,” says Kerry-Ann Strange, Sausage Saloon’s global marketing executive. “Market research shows Mauritius is one of Africa’s most competitive and successful economies, making it a prime investment location for us.”

A Family Legacy of Flavor

Founded in 1997 by Ralph Strange and his sons, David and Steven, Sausage Saloon has grown from humble beginnings into a beloved South African brand. The family’s experience in the restaurant industry, including ownership of award-winning steakhouses, laid the foundation for their vision: to transform the simple hotdog into a dynamic, high-energy dining experience. The very first Sausage Saloon opened in an Alberton mall east of Johannesburg, where it continues to thrive.

Leading the Charge in Mauritius

Spearheading the Mauritius expansion is South African-born master franchisor Tshidi Matjeke-Dlungwane. A driven entrepreneur, she shares the Strange family’s passion for bold flavors and ambitious growth. The first Sausage Saloon kiosk on the island is located at Le Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis, with plans to extend to major shopping centers and key locations. The goal? To establish 12 outlets in Mauritius by 2026.

The franchise sector has increasingly become a space where women entrepreneurs thrive. According to the Franchise Association of South Africa (FASA), approximately 30% of franchises in the country were owned by women in 2023. As more women step into leadership roles, they are redefining the industry and driving business success.

“Running a franchise requires resilience,” says Tshidi. “Education on franchising is crucial because it’s a powerful vehicle for building generational wealth. My advice to aspiring franchise owners, especially women, is to surround yourself with a strong support network and never give up. Get to know the franchisor well—it’s a partnership, and you need to align. Ask questions, be proactive, and remember: A franchise is a business within a business. The framework is already there; you just need to put in the work.”

A Recipe for Global Success

Sausage Saloon is more than just a hotdog brand—it’s about community, connection, and creating memorable dining experiences. “The unwavering support from the Sausage Saloon team has made this journey incredibly rewarding,” adds Tshidi.

With nearly three decades of expertise in crafting exceptional hotdogs, the brand has built a reputation for quality, generous portions, and innovation. “We’re on a mission to be wherever hotdog cravings strike,” says Kerry-Ann Strange. “From permanent locations to food trucks and trailers, we’re expanding through strategic franchise partnerships to ensure we’re always within reach.”

The company’s expansion is not merely about increasing store numbers; it’s about spreading joy through great food. “In a fast-paced world, sometimes all you need is a delicious hotdog to brighten your day,” Kerry-Ann explains. “With a long-term vision of growing our global network to 2,000 stores, we’re committed to bringing happiness to more people than ever before.”

A Local Touch, A Global Mission

While hotdogs remain the heart of the menu, Sausage Saloon adapts its offerings to suit local tastes, ensuring options for Halaal and vegetarian diets. “Beyond expanding our footprint, we’re committed to contributing to Mauritius’ economy by hiring and training locals in line with our high service standards,” says Kerry-Ann.

As for visitors to Mauritius, Tshidi extends a warm invitation: “Next time you’re on the island—whether for business or pleasure—stop by a Sausage Saloon store. Every bite is a celebration. And remember, life’s too short for boring hotdogs!”
