Chicken Licken a pioneer of transformation

During the early 1980s, Chicken Licken founder George Sombonos broke the laws of the day by establishing restaurants in Soweto and serving people of all races in their cars. Today, Chicken Licken has over 220 outlets located across southern Africa, and more than half its franchisees are black.

There is an interesting aside to this: presently, about 48% of Chicken Licken’s customers are white, prompting the company to move beyond the townships into upmarket shopping centres in historically white areas, with outstanding results.

Sombonos is not abandoning his traditional markets, however. He firmly believes that transformation will continue to drive Chicken Licken’s growth in years to come but cautions that funding remains a problem.
