Franchise: Kauai Food and Juice

Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose Kauai Food and Juice franchise?
I went down the franchise route as I wanted the support of a franchisor when putting capital into a volatile business market. I chose Kauai as I had been an admirer of the brand since its inception and I believed that healthy eating was a growing segment of the market.

What did you do before taking up your Kauai franchise?
I was a partner in a family run farming business for 10 years. Before that I worked in the banking industry in London.

How did you raise the finance?
From the sale of my existing business as well as a business loan using my house as collateral.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
I receive two months of in store training. Training is integral to Kauai and is on going for all staff and owners.

What is a typical day for you as a Kauai franchisee?
I have multiple stores now so I employ franchisee consultants to oversee several stores. My job is to visit at least two stores a day, check financials, the store’s look and feel, get a feel for service issues, speak to customers, deal with any supplier issues and or equipment repairs, resolve issues with my managers. Equally I must plan each stores cash flow, pay all my suppliers and try every day to achieve the best results I can.

What challenges have you faced?
Sourcing friendly competent reliable staff is a big challenge as ones staff member determines the customer experience to a large degree. Cash flow can be very tight in the initial 12 months of opening a new store.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?
Yes it has. I have found a business that I enjoy and that has performed well during recessionary times. I enjoy the relative freedom of not having to be too concerned with certain aspects of the business that the franchisor takes care of (ie supplier price negotiations). This allows me the freedom to concentrate on improving the customer experience and grow my business.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?
Always make sure you have enough capital or another source of income to live off while you get your business off the ground. It is unreasonable to expect a business to make money for you from the first day. Some will – most wont.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans are to keep on growing. I enjoy the challenges associated with growth and developing people.

Would you do it again?
Yes!
