2000 Stores for Famous Brands
Branded restaurant franchisor Famous Brands, Wimpy Durban North, in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). This restaurant brings the total Wimpy network in Africa to 509, with a further 128 Wimpy restaurants in the United Kingdom.
Famous Brands CEO, Kevin Hedderwick says: “It is fitting that our 2000th restaurant is a Wimpy located in KZN, the birthplace of the very first Wimpy restaurant ever opened – in 1967 – in Durban.”
Over the past five years, the Group has opened 593 new restaurants. “Assuming each restaurant employs an average of 30 people, this equates to the creation of 17 790 new jobs, which means that with a total network of 2000 restaurants, we are indirectly accountable for the livelihoods of 60 000 people. In addition to creating employment in the franchise network, we have also added 446 people to our own staff complement – an increase equivalent to 53.2%,” Hedderwick says.
Where to from here
Hedderwick notes that the Group is comfortable with growing its footprint in its home markets of South Africa and Africa. “At this point we believe there is more than enough growth potential for our brands across the Southern African continent – and we have no desire to become a global business.”
The Group’s brand portfolio currently comprises Steers, Wimpy, Debonairs Pizza, FishAways, Mugg & Bean, tashas, House of Coffees, Brazilian/Brazilian Café, Blacksteer, Giramundo, KEG, McGinty’s, Vovo Telo, O’Hagan’s, Milky Lane, Juicy Lucy, Brewers Guild, and Creative Coffees. The Group also manufactures and supplies its franchisees and the retail trade with a wide range of meat, sauces, spices, bakery, ice cream, fruit juice and mineral water products.
